NDA will have majority even if Sena withdraws

Even if the 15 members of the Shiv Sena pull out of the 299-strong National Democratic Alliance on the issue of its chief Bal Thackeray's prosecution, the ruling coalition government will not fall.

The halfway mark in the Lok Sabha is 272. However, at present some seats are vacant, bringing down the effective strength to 540.

Thus, even if the Shiv Sena members remain adamant and pull out of the NDA, the government, with 274 members, will survive, but barely. It will also leave the NDA extremely vulnerable to threats from other parties.
