Attack on party office: NCP demands arrest of culprits

The Nationalist Congress Party on Wednesday demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the recent attack on its headquarters in New Delhi and asked Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani to take steps to prevent such 'fascist incidents'.

A delegation led by party general secretary Purno Sangma met Advani and alleged that some Shiv Sena activists equipped with 'deadly weapons' made a 'calculated attack' on the NCP headquarters and tried to set it on fire.

"Even though our president, Sharad Pawar, had written to you seeking immediate action on this matter, no arrests have been made so far. It is strange that such fascist forces are having their way with impunity," the NCP said in a memorandum.

The miscreants had even threatened to kill the staff staying in the office premises, the memorandum alleged.

"Such incidents have seldom occurred in our country. It is a serious threat to the normal functioning of political parties in this country, which is wedded to the democratic system of government," it said.

Suspected Shiv Sena activists had hurled soda bottles and a torch on the NCP headquarters on the night of July 16 to protest against the move to prosecute their leader, Bal Thackeray.

Sangma said Advani's response was 'quite positive'.
