Anti-dam sentiments rise in Pakistan

Resistance to the Kalabagh Dam is beginning to snowball in Pakistan with leaders of the Awami National Party and Sindh Irrigation Minister Syed Ali Amir Shah describing the project as ''disastrous for the integrity of the country.''

The opposition leaders have been joined in protest by over 35 Sindhi Nationalist leaders, writers and journalists who claimed that the project was a ''well planned conspiracy against Sindhis,'' the Daily News reported.

While the ANP has vowed to resist the construction of the dam, the Sindh minister made it abundantly clear that the project would only benefit Punjab and Sindh would get nothing out of it.

The ANP cabinet, which met in Peshawar on Sunday, passed a resolution, which strongly opposed construction of the dam.

Pakistan's three elected assemblies of Sindh, North West Frontier Provinve and Baluchistan have passed resolutions against the dam on more than one occasion. The NWFP has said if the disputed project is executed it will harm the country's solidarity and unity, the Dawn reported.
