29 more peacocks die, toll mounts to 80

E-Mail this report to a friend

Twenty-nine more peacocks were found dead on Saturday in Sitapur village of Morena district in Madhya Pradesh taking the death toll in the past few days to 80.

Confirming the deaths, District Collector Pramod Agrawal said that these deaths were also due to the birds consuming bajra contaminated by pesticides.

The collector and superintendent of police had rushed to the village for a spot assessment of the tragedy, which has occurred about 15 kilometres from the district headquarters.

Earlier in the day, the administration had claimed to have rushed teams for preventing any more deaths of the national bird following a total of 51 deaths in the last few days.

The post-mortem report has revealed that the death of ten peacocks was due to consumption of foodgrains containing chemicals of 'organo-phosphet' category, veterinary officer Dr S Mishra said.

"However, the final conclusion could be drawn only after the viscera report is obtained from the Sagar-based forensic laboratory," he added.

However, the district collector has said no person could be booked for the deaths as there was no prima-facie evidence.
