BJP may join government in Manipur

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to join the government in Manipur, striking an alliance with the Manipur State Congress-led United Front.

Intense discussions were on between the BJP and MSCP leaders to forge a minimum common programme, BJP national council secretary P B Acharya said in Imphal Tuesday.

The BJP, having secured six seats, is also expected to elect its legislature party leader for the seventh assembly during the day.

With the BJP joining the government, Acharya said, the state would have greater access to development, as adequate funds have been assured by the Centre.

The BJP had earlier urged Governor Ved Marwah not to entertain the claim for majority by the UF without verification.

The MSCP alone has so far bagged 23 seats. It managed to increase the strength considerably by roping in nine more legislators from the Nationalist Congress Party, the Manipur People's Party, the Janata Dal (United) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal.

With the Federal Party of Manipur, another front partner, claiming six seats, the UF's combined tally stands at 38.
