Vajpayee congratulates Bush

In a message to Bush, Vajpayee recalled his telephone conversation with the Texas governor during his US visit in September this year when the American leader had expressed hope for a 'close and strong partnership' between the two countries.

"I am happy that the new warmth and vibrancy that has been infused into the India-USA bilateral relationship has popular support across the political spectrum in both our countries," he said.

"I extend my warmest congratulations on your election as the next president of USA. As you prepare to lead your country into the new millennium, my good wishes, and those of the government and the people of India, are with you,'' Vajpayee said.

Bush would be assuming office at a time when Indo-US relations are characterized by growing warmth and cooperation, an external affairs ministry spokesman told reporters in New Delhi.
