CRPF jawan among four killed in J&K

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Four persons, including one CRPF jawan, were killed and 16 others, including security personnel, were wounded in two bomb explosions in northern Baramulla district on Thursday afternoon.

Police said a powerful bomb exploded near a motor workshop in the Sopore town in the afternoon killing two persons, including a Central Reserve Police Force jawan who has been identified as P M Pradhan.

While one civilian bystander also died in the explosion that shook Sopore town, another died in hospital.

Police said 15 persons, including three security personnel, were injured. Among the injured was the commandant of 82 battalion, CRPF. Ten seriously injured persons were shifted to Srinagar and admitted in various hospitals.

Sources said the blast triggered panic in Sopore town with residents running helter skelter for cover. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast.

Immediately after the explosion, Sopore Superintendent of Police Showkat Malik rushed to the spot along with reinforcements. The area was sealed.

Earlier, another powerful bomb exploded near Kralhar on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway killing Mushtaq Ahmad Kar, an official of the Food Corporation of India, instantaneously.

In another incident, a driver of a private bus transporting soldiers received injuries and the vehicle was partially damaged.

Sources said an improvised explosive device was attached to a bicycle, which was parked on the highway. The IED exploded when vehicles carrying soldiers were passing by. The area was later cordoned off and searches were mounted.

This is the third instance of militants targeting security personnel with explosives using bicycles.

Militants also shot at and killed a prominent National Conference worker Abdul Rahman at village Zachaldara in northern Kupwara district on Wednesday night.

Some militants lobbed a hand grenade on the Communist Party of India-Marxist office at Kulgam in south Kashmir. However, no one was injured in the attack.
