PM wants amicable solution to Ayodhya dispute

Prime Minister A B Vajpayee said that he would like to see an amicable solution to the Ayodhya dispute.

Speaking to reporters at the Iftar party of Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development Shah Nawaz Hussain, Vajpayee said that his government had no secret agenda and all the opposition parties were exaggerating his statement made on Wednesday.

He pointed out that it was the responsibility of all political parties to ensure the smooth functioning of Parliament.

On the Ram Temple issue, he said, "Mandir kaise bane, kahan bane, yeh mahatvapurna sawaal hai." (How the temple should be constructed, where it is to be constructed, are important questions.)

Vajpayee also clarified that there was no truth in the opposition claim that the National Democratic Alliance allies, especially the Trinamul Congress and the Telugu Desam Party parties were unhappy with his statement.

"I met Mamata Banerjee and Y Naidu on Thursday afternoon and they have expressed satisfaction after I clarified my position to them," he added.

The prime minister clarified on Thursday afternoon that construction of the Ram temple was on the agenda of the Bharatiya Janata Party Janata Party and not of the NDA.

On the Jammu and Kashmir issue and on talks with Pakistan on the issue, he said, "We want to talk with our own people as, on earlier occasions, we had spoken to Pakistan."
