Pak announces restraint along LoC

Bowing to international pressure to respond positively to India's unilateral ceasefire declaration in Jammu and Kashmir, Islamabad Saturday announced that its armed forces would observe "maximum restraint" along the Line of Control.

"With immediate effect the Pakistan armed forces deployed along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir will observe maximum restraint in order to strengthen and stabilise the ceasefire," Foreign Secretary Inamu Haq announced at a press conference In Islamabad.

Pakistan had been at the receiving end for not reciprocating New Delhi's Ramzan ceasefire offer in the state with the US and other key countries firmly telling Islamabad to avail of this opportunity to break the stalemate in Indo-Pak ties.

Haq, however, said Pakistan expected India to "reciprocate this initiative and cease firing across the LoC."

India's suspension of military operations against the separatists in the state would be "meaningful only if it is combined with a purposeful dialogue" for a peaceful settlement of the Kashmir issue, he said.

He said Pakistan was prepared to enter into a meaningful dialogue with India to address the Kashmir issue "in conformity with the UN Security Council resolutions, principles of justice, international law and the past agreements between the two countries.
