Editor shot dead in Manipur: PTITwo persons shot dead Thounaojam Brajamani, editor of an English daily in Imphal on Sunday night, police said on Monday. The 70-year-old editor of Manipur News died on the spot when the men shot him from point blank range after stopping his two-wheeler in the heart of the city. Brajamani, who had received a death threat recently, had gone to the office of a local Manipuri daily to hire a computer operator. The incident occurred when the editor was returning to office along with the operator. The gunmen did not harm the operator, the police said. The operator rushed back to office and reported the matter, the police said. By then, the assailants had escaped under the cover of darkness. The motive behind the killing was not immediately known, the police said. Family sources said a person rang up the editor's residence and threatened to kill him on August 15. On August 17, Manipur News reported that a caller had threatened to kill the editor. Brajamani also wrote about the threat in his editorial on August 18, saying he would welcome further calls from the man so that the ''conflicts of mind with the caller may be negotiated''. Brajamani's body was taken from the Regional Institute of Medical Science Hospital after a post-mortem to the Manipur Press Club, where friends, colleagues and journalists paid their last respects. Deputy chief minister Leishangthem Chandramani Singh was among those who visited the hospital and press club. Brajamani was founder president of the Manipur State Journalists Association and convenor of the Journalist Front, Manipur. He set up Manipur News 25 years ago.
