Gopal establishes contact with Veerappan

Journalist-emissary R R Gopal has established contact with forest brigand Veerappan on his second mission to secure the release of Kannada film icon Dr Rajakumar even as the deadline set by the bandit for responding to his second set of demands expired on Saturday.

Karnataka Home Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge told reporters that the state government had information from its counterpart in Tamil Nadu that Gopal had established contact with Veerappan but added that no other details were known.

Gopal had set out from Madras on Thursday to convey to Veerappan the response of the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments to his second set of demands. The fugitive has been holding Dr Rajakumar and three others in captivity since July 30.

The Tamil Nadu government had revoked the National Security Act against four Tamil militants and Terrorist And Disruptive Activities Act charges against another, but they have refused to seek bail insisting on withdrawal of all cases. against them.
