Parliament approves creation of Jharkhand

E-Mail this report to a friend

Parliament on Friday approved creation of a new Jharkhand state with the Rajya Sabha passing the Bihar Reorganisation Bill by a voice vote. The bill, already passed by the Lok Sabha, was approved after rejecting amendments moved by some members from the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Congress and Biju Janata Dal.

With this, the government has fulfilled its promise to carve three new states - Chhattisgarh, Uttaranchal and Jharkhand out of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, respectively.

The other two bills - Madhya Pradesh Reorganisation Bill and Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Bill - were approved by Parliament earlier this week.

Replying to a discussion on the bill, Home Minister L K Advani said the three states would be created by November one.
