Sorabjee may step down as AG

E-Mail this report to a friend

Josy Joseph in New Delhi

Soli Sorabjee is expected to step down as Attorney General of India.

Sources said the government may move Sorabjee to the International Court of Justice, The Hague, as India's representative.

Sources said Sorabjee, who came under attack from former Union law minister Ram Jethmalani during the latter's resignation drama, is believed to be pressing the Union government for his appointment as the country's representative at the ICJ. Till recently, the government was unwilling to give in.

Solicitor General Harish Salve, once Sorabjee's junior counsel, is tipped to be the next AG.

Sorabjee's exit will save the government some embarrassment, as the opposition Congress joined Jethmalani in demanding a parliamentary probe into his conduct.
