E-Mail this report to a friend

The road links to Assam with the rest of the country were snapped as the rain-fed Brahmaputra and its major tributaries submerged several districts, official reports said Friday.

Authorities closed National Highway 31, connecting the state with the rest of the country, Thursday evening after it was inundated in the worst-affected Rangiya district.

The army was leading rescue and relief work in Rangiya and Tinsukia districts where swollen rivers had flooded several villages. In Rangiya, the Nona and Puthimari rivers had breached several places submering vast areas.

In Tinsukia district, the Brahmaputra, which was flowing over the danger mark, breached its embankment at Hatighuli inundating more than 25 villages. Affected people have been moved to relief camps set by the administration, the report said.

More than 100,000 people have been hit by the flood in Barpeta district when the Pahumara river breached at Kalarguri. One person died in Dhemaji district.

In Dhemai and Nalbari districts, the Brahmaputra, the Pagladia, the Mora-Pagladia and the Nona rivers had submerged about 50 villages in each district, the reports said.

In Darrang district, more than 100 people were marooned after the Nonai river breached at Patharighat.
