9 die in stampede at Garhwal shrine

E-Mail this report to a friend

Nine women were trampled to death and 20 others injured in a stampede at the famed Neelkanth Mahadev shrine in the Garhwal region of northern Uttar Pradesh early on Tuesday morning.

Police said overcrowding triggered the stampede at 0200 hrs. While seven women died on the spot, two succumbed to injuries at a Rishikesh hospital.

Thousands of pilgrims have been visiting the shrine everyday since July 16 - the beginning of holy 'Shravan' month. Sunday being a new moon day, the crowds had swelled considerably.

The victims included Savitri Negi of Ambala, Guddi Devi of Saharanpur and Manju Devi and Manorama Dobhal of Dehra Dun.

The pilgrims visit this mountain shrine of Lord Shiva every year at the beginning of the holy Shravan month to make their offerings of Holy water.
