Notice served on Chandra Shekhar's Bhondsi ashram

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Haryana Government on Monday issued a notice to an ashram set up by former prime minister Chandra Shekhar at Bhondsi, asking him to show cause why the land gifted to the ashram by the Bhondsi Gram Panchayat should not be taken back.

The notice said since the ashram had failed to comply with the conditions set by the Bhondsi Gram Panchayat, including setting up of a college and a polytechnic on the land, the panchayat now wanted the 50-acre plot back.

The notice follows an assurance given to this effect by the state government to the Haryana high court, which is hearing a PIL filed by B L Wadhera alleging that the land has not been put to the use it was originally sought to be.

The notice has been issued to the Bharat Yatra Kendra, to which the land the gifted in 1990 after Chandrasekhar returned from his padyatra from Kanyakumari to New Delhi.

The trust has been given three weeks' time to reply to the notice.

Wadhera in his petition has also pointed out that another 500-acre plot was gifted to the ashram by the panchayat without the requisite government sanction.
