E-Mail this report to a friend

A fire that broke out at an army ordnance depot near Bharatpur in Rajasthan this afternoon left one person dead and three injured, official sources said.

Defence Minister George Fernandes, who is on a visit to Srinagar, is cutting short his stay to rush to Bharatpur, a defence spokesman in New Delhi said.

Thirteen villages in the vicinity including Tatamada, Moondota, Malipura, Gamodi and Mandoli have been evacuated as a precautionary measure, the sources added.

The people of these villages have been shifted to schools and dharmashalas (rest houses) and a team of doctors from Jaipur has rushed to the spot.

The cause of the fire, which broke out at 1700 hrs, was not immediately known.

Six fire tenders, including one aqua foam forming truck, have been pressed into service.

The fire has disrupted movement of goods and passenger trains.
