Le Figaro apologises to Narayanan

E-Mail this report to a friend

Le Figaro, the newspaper that described visiting Indian President K R Narayanan as an untouchable in at least two articles, has apologised to him.

The paper's editor-in-chief, Michel Shifres, had the letter delivered to Narayanan when he arrived in Toulouse for a visit of Aerospatiale and Airbus.

Narayanan was apparently upset by the references to him as an untouchable in Le Figaro, in a piece apparently written by its Indian correspondent.

Shifres wrote, "It was not our intention to hurt you or be disrespectful to you", and went on to speak of the good relations between France and India.

Indian diplomats had taken exception to the term used by Le Figaro, Le Monde and France-Soir and said it was in bad taste.
