Four militants killed after night-long gun battle

Four militants were killed and three security personnel injured in a fierce night-long clash at Burzahama on the outskirts of Srinagar, while elsewhere in the valley a self-styled regimental commander and a forest employee were among three people killed since last evening.

Security forces averted two major tragedies, arrested a militant and recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition including RDX, grenades and other weapons across the valley.

A defence ministry spokesman said troops recovered 20 anti-tank grenades, six hand grenades and 12 sticks of RDX during a search operation in Lolab valley of north Kashmir last evening.

He said security forces killed a self-styled regimental commander during a search operation at Banihal late last night. An AK rifle, three magazines and a wireless set were recovered from the militant identified as Adil of Pakistan.

In Poonch, a forest employee was killed by unidentified militants. Mohi-ud-Din was killed when a mine went off at Athwat forest in north Kashmir last evening.

The police averted a major tragedy when they detected and defused a powerful improvised explosive device planted by militants at Palwal in Satwari area early this morning.
