11 killed, blast near radio station in J&K

Militants made an abortive bid to disrupt transmission of Radio Kashmir today when they detonated a powerful explosive device, Eight other militants and two women were among eleven people killed in sporadic overnight clashes elsewhere in the valley.

Security forces also arrested a senior militant and recovered RDX, grenades and wireless sets in the past 24 hours.

Official sources said militants exploded the device near the outer wall of the heavily-guarded complex of Radio Kashmir at around 8 am. The wall was damaged but no one was reported injured in the blast.

Sources said the explosion was so powerful that it shattered the window panes and doors of the buildings Radio Kashmir, Doordarshan and the tourist reception centre.

However, transmission was not affected.

Meanwhile, an official spokesperson said security forces killed three militants in an encounter during a search operation at Adbas last evening.

He said forces also gunned down two militants at Kotli Kalaban during a search operation early today. Two AK rifles and 13 kgs of RDX were recovered from the slain militants.

Foreign militant Alfaz Hussain was killed in a joint operation by troops of the Kilo Force and the Jammu and Kashmir police special operation group at Dooraswani woods in the frontier district of Kupwara last evening. One AK rifle, one grenade launcher, two grenades, one wireless set and four magazines were recovered.

Security forces also killed one militant each at Kot-Dhare and Dodsdan-Yahathpora in different encounters last evening. One Universal machine gun, one AK rifle, two pistols, six grenades, and one wireless set were recovered from the slain militants.

The spokesperson said the body of one unidentified person was recovered from the Jhelum river at Baramulla. The bodies of Noor Jehan, wife of one Nazir Ahmad Pathan, and Parveen Akhtar, daughter of one Mohammad Ismail, were fished out from Jhelum at Nagazal Shopian last evening.

He said two security personnel were injured when a grenade lobbed by militants exploded near their picket at Cheeni Chowk in the south Kashmir district of Anantnag last evening.

Security forces nabbed Fayaz Ahmad Khanday, a militant of the outlawed Hizbul Mujahideen, at Watrad Badgam last evening. Two remote controls, two grenades and two magazines were recovered.
