Sharief's lawyer files appeal against life-term verdict

E-Mail this report to a friend

The defence lawyer of Nawaz Sharief filed an appeal with the Sindh High Court on Wednesday against the life sentence awarded to the former prime minister on April 6 by an anti-terrorism court.

The case relates to denial of landing facilities to a Pakistan International Airlines flight bringing General Musharraf back from a conference in Sri Lanka after he was sacked as the army chief. The plane did land and the general staged a coup d'etat, seizing power and throwing Sharief into jail.

The appeal on Wednesday was filed with the deputy registrar of the high court within the prescribed period. It will be heard by a two-member bench headed by Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar and S A Rabani. The date for hearing will be announced later in consultation with the chief justice of the Sindh High Court.

Shaikh told newspersons that he was ''100 per cent'' optimistic that he will get Sharief freed.
