E-Mail this report to a friend

United Arab Emirates president Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan has issued a federal decree endorsing an agreement for legal and judicial cooperation in civil and commercial matters, an accord for legal assistance in criminal issues and an extradition treaty between the UAE and India, media reports said today.

According to the agreement for legal and judicial cooperation in civil and commercial issues, both parties shall undertake to provide the maximum limit of legal assistance in line with the laws of either country.

The provisions of the agreement shall not violate any rights or obligations of either party as a result of other agreements and arrangements and shall be applicable to any request for legal assistance with respect to a civil or commercial issue whether arising before or after the validity of the accord.

The agreement for legal assistance in criminal issues has explained the fields of its application, its purposes and the central authorities in both countries and shall be applicable from the date of exchange of documents.

Relations between India and the UAE have witnessed an upswing in the recent past. UAE minister for information and culture Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al Nahyan recently concluded a visit to India, which was described as ''highly successful'' by the Indian mission in Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh Abdullah had meetings with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley.

He also delivered a personal message from the UAE president to Vajpayee, in which the latter was invited to visit the Emirates.
