4 AP policemen killed by Naxalites in mine blast

E-Mail this report to a friend

In yet another offensive, four policemen, including a reserve sub-inspector, were killed and another was injured in a landmine blast triggered by Naxalites of the banned People's War Group in a dense forest near Kataram village of Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh on Monday afternoon.

A police officer attached to the Kataram police station told United News of India on telephone that 35 Naxalites lay in wait when a twenty-member police party was searching for land mines in the area in view of tomorrow's repoll.

When one group of policemen noticed a wire and tried to examine it, the militants triggered the landmine, killing four policemen on the spot. The other policemen opened fire on the extremists, resulting in an encounter lasting more than three hours. But the Naxalites escaped into the forests.

Home Minister A Madhava Reddy and top police officials rushed to the spot.

Twelve policemen, including an Indian Police Service officer, and a legislator have been killed by PWG extremists in different incidents in the state since September 4.
