Police constable Anoop Singh today said bags and suitcases were brought to the residence of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Suraj Mandal in the last week of July 1993. He said he learnt from the cook the then member of Parliament that these contained currency notes.

Deposing in the court of additional sessions judge Ajit Bharihoke, holding trial in the case involving the bribery of MPs, the constable posted as a personal security officer to Mandal said he himself had no personal knowledge about the contents of the bags and suitcases brought in two cars.

Later, Mandal's cook Dara told him that these contained currency notes, Anoop Singh, who appeared as the 99th witness in the case, told the court today.

According to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which investigated the case, Mandal and other opposition MPs were paid bribes to vote against the July 28, 1993 no-confidence motion against the then prime minister P V Narasimha Rao.

Ravinder Kumar, the complainant in the case, will depose in the court tomorrow. He was to give a statement today as the 100th witness, but sought adjournment of the hearing on the plea that he was not well.

The former prime minister and Mandal are among the accused in the case.
