Another cyclone to storm Orissa coast

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Orissa government on Thursday directed the collectors of coastal districts to evacuate people from low-lying areas in view of a severe cyclone expected Friday morning.

The storm was centred over east-central Bay of Bengal, about 500 km south-east of Paradeep, Thursday morning at 17.5 degree north latitude and 90 degree longitude. It is likely to intensify further and move in a north-westerly direction and cross the Orissa coast between Puri and Balasore by Friday morning.

Officials said under its influence heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by gales reaching up to 180 to 200 km per hour, is likely to lash the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Nayagarh, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Balasore and Mayurbhanja.

Gales reaching 120 to 140 km per hour is likely to commence from midnight and might cause widespread damage in the coastal region. Tidal waves are likely to rise, the authorities said, warning the fishermen not to venture out into the sea.
