Police foil bid to blow up J&K secretariat

E-Mail this report to a friend

A militant bid to blow up the civil secretariat in Srinagar, which houses the offices of the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, his cabinet colleagues and top bureaucrats, was foiled by the state police this morning.

Official sources said that militants had planted a powerful improvised explosive device some 200 metres away from the heavily-guarded civil secretariat this morning.

However, the device planted in a tin box, was noticed by police officials who informed the bomb disposal squad. The device was taken to Bemina, about five kilometres from the secretariat, and was defused.

Meanwhile, four militants were killed and two jawans were injured in the Kashmir valley since last evening.

Sources said at least two jawans were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in hit a land mine at Aragam near Bandipora in north Kashmir today. The vehicle was completely damaged in the blast, the sources said, adding the blast followed an exchange of fire between militants and the security forces.

A defence ministry spokesman said that troops shot dead four militants during an encounter at Ashmuqam in the south Kashmir district of Anantnag last night. They also recovered some arms and ammunition from the possession of the slain militants.
