Gamang asks for another central team

Orissa Chief Minister Giridhar Gamang Thursday urged the Centre to send another team to assess the damages caused by the super cyclone.

Speaking with an eight-member inter-ministerial central team, Gamang said the necessity for sending a second team arose as most of the cyclone-ravaged areas continued to be inaccessible a week after the disaster. Reports from several remote areas are yet to reach Bhubaneswar, he said.

He said the rescue, relief and rehabilitation work were on full swing. But the restoration work was a massive task for the state.

''The Centre should assist us to take up permanent measures in a scientific way for the rehabilitation of the people,'' he told the experts, who arrived in the state capital from New Delhi Wednesday evening. His government was planning to take up various measures such as coastal area development and disaster management to minimise the effects of natural calamities, he added.

The Orissa government is also thinking of submitting a detailed report to the Centre about the steps to be taken for a permanent solution to such problems.

The chief minister said the 50-hour cyclone has totally paralysed life in 10 coastal districts.
