Trinamool welcomes Pope's visit

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Trinamool Congress today welcomed the proposed visit of Pope John Paul II to India this weekend.

''We welcome the visit of the Pope as a good gesture on his part to be in a country with unity in diversity,'' party chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee told a press conference in New Delhi.

''Everybody in India should extend due courtesy to the Pope,'' she said, but declined to comment on the protest being carried out by some Hindu fundamentalist organisations.

''We (Trinamool Congress) are doing our duty by welcoming the Pope,'' she added.
