India takes a giant step with PSLV launch

India took a giant step in achieving self-reliance in space technology with today's successful launch of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C2).

The PSLV-C2 has hurled into space an Indian remote-sensing satellite (IRS-P4) along with two other micro satellites from Korea and Germany which have been launched on commercial basis.

In less than 25 years, the Indian space programme has graduated from sounding rockets to launching one-tonne-class satellites in middle and low-earth orbits. This is considered a significant achievement as very few countries possess launch vehicle technology.

The PSLV-C2/IRS-P4 mission represents India's technological self-reliance in designing and building state-of-the-art remote-sensing satellites and launching them from within the country.
