Sri Lankan govt not aware of specific LTTE threat to Sonia

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Sri Lankan government has no information about any specific threat from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam to Congress president Sonia Gandhi nor have the Indian authorities been informed about such a threat perception.

Commenting on news reports which appeared in Indian newspapers to this effect, a senior Indian official in Colombo today said that ''the Sri Lankan government has not told us of any such threats to the life of Sonia Gandhi though there have been discussions in general that she may be a target of the LTTE.''

Certain reports in the Indian media had suggested that a wireless message intercepted between a Madras-based LTTE operative and one based in Jaffna revealed that the LTTE was serious about targeting Sonia Gandhi because it feared a crackdown on it if she became the prime minister.
