Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi range) Y S Dadwal, who had visited the restaurant where model Jessica Lal was shot dead on April 30, was today relieved from his post.

The relieving order was passed this afternoon after a high-level meeting in the Union home ministry at which Home Secretary Kamal Pandey, Delhi Police Commissioner V N Singh and other senior officers were present, sources said.

Dadwal's presence at The Tamarind Court, which was running a bar illegally well past midnight, had raised a major controversy.

During his questioning, the senior police officer had claimed to have been unaware of the bar being run without a licence.

Dadwal also told the investigating officers that he had left the restaurant much before the killing took place at about 0200 IST on April 30.

The Delhi police had been maintaining that since Dadwal was not present in the restaurant at the time of the incident, his visit there had little bearing on the murder investigation.

Joint Commissioner of Police (southern range) Amod Kanth had on several occasions told reporters that Dadwal was questioned merely to elicit information regarding the people present in the restaurant.

Dadwal had falsified the stand taken by socialite Bina Ramani, owner of the restaurant, that a private party was going on at the restaurant when the incident took place by saying he had gone there to have his supper.
