Bridge falls into river

E-Mail this report to a friend

Vehicular traffic between West Sikkim and the rest of the state has snapped following the collapse of a bridge over the Reshi river on the Jorethang-Legship state highway Thursday night.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (range) Oma Hung Subba Friday said the vital bridge, linking Legship and the National Hydro Power Corporation township of Rangeetnagar, collapsed when a 10-wheeler truck loaded with 14 tonnes of iron rods was crossing.

The steel bridge gave way due to the "excess" load. The vehicle fell into the gorge, and its cleaner was seriously injured. He has been rushed to the Namchi district hospital in south Sikkim.
