'Can you show even a handful of Christian priests who are not ethnocentric?'

Subject: Vaihayasi Pande Daniel's article

I too am ashamed that in our land that follows the concept of vasudeivaka kudumbakam such violent incidents occurred. I strongly condemn them. But Ms Vaihayasi Pande Daniel has conveniently forgotten the missionary zealots who reduced Jesus to an ethnocentrist by claiming only their way is the way to salvation and that Hindus, Muslims and other non-Christians would not achieve salvation. Such preaching is contrary to the Bible.

The Bible, may I point out, is not a book just for the missionaries alone. It is a book for all the people in the world. The Bible clearly says that God sent messengers to all lands. Since God is all-powerful, he would have been aware of Hindu versions and Hindu ways of worship when the Bible was given. Had the Hindu ways been unacceptable to God he would have listed the names of our versions of God and banned them. Instead, the god of the Bible has only said that he has sent his messengers all over the world. This is proof enough that the god of Bible recognises other gods.

In spite of the Bible, these missionaries go on to say that Hindu versions of worship are invalid etc. Such ethnocentrists should be condemned strongly. I challenge Ms Vaihayasi Pande Daniel to show a handful of Christian priests who are not ethnocentric -- who recognise Hinduism as valid. I can show her thousands of Hindu priests who recognise Christianity, Islam, and other religions.

Subject: Karunanidhi and Tilak

Indians are really fortunate to have a democracy, I feel. Otherwise, imagine the plight of the believers, whether brahmins or otherwise, in an autocratic state with leaders like Karunanidhi supported by Maran!!! There is no difference between the anti-Jewish views of Hitler and anti-brahmin/Hindu views of Karunanidhi. The only thing that controls them is the election every 5 years and the fact that they are answerable to the central government. I still don't know what he will say if he had really brought the state to prosperity. He has such a horrible record of rule for almost 15 years. Long live our Indian democracy...

Subject: Mishra's report on the Orissa tragedy

At last we have a report that is from the ground, not from armchair of some Leftists/minority writer. How come this did not figure as the lead item instead of the sensation mongering of George Iype? Every report of George only heightens the popular perception that Christians hide behind the coat tails of the colonialist/imperialists (to use Marxian language) to carry on their nefarious activities. How come no one is trying to find out if the Orissa Congress was behind this barbaric carnage to divert the attention from Anjana Mishra's case? It could well be they (the Congress) had perpetrated this as they know very well that Leftists/anarchists/fifth columnists (read CPI/CPI-ML/CPI-M in that order) are just looking for any stick to beat the BJP at the Centre.

Instead of criticising foreign diplomats for interfering in Indian affairs, why should George yearn to hide behind their coat tails? There is a common belief among Indians that in Kali Yug what you sow so shall you reap in this birth itself. May be the Christian community is paying for the black deeds it has committed over centuries through inquisitions, crusades, destroying better civilisations in search of El Dorado. Christians are not only attacked in India but in Indonesia, Myanmar, China and elsewhere. Why? What about the torching of two Turkish children in Germany, what happened to the loudmouth which uttered the word "preying wolves"? Does his conscience not prick? Or did he turn his face the other way rather than his cheek?

Subject: Mahendra Kapoor

I enjoyed this article. I am not a great fan of him but have always enjoyed his popular songs, especially from Hamraaz. I am not sure about some of the facts that you have mentioned in this article. You have mentioned about movies like Dharmaputra, Insaaf ka Tarazu, Nikaah etc made by 'Chopra'. In the previous paragraph, you mentioned Yash Chopra's name. That kind of gives the impression that these movies were made by Yash Chopra. To the best of my knowledge they were made by B R Chopra. I am not sure if Mahendra Kapoor has sang for Yash Chopra, but he has for B R Chopra.

Secondly, your first paragraph is totally wrong. Agreed, Mahendra Kapoor is a great singer, but calling him - '...after the demise of Talat Mahmood, the sole witness to the 50s decade...' is really going overboard. What about Manna De, Lata, Asha?

Subject: Ashok Banker on the great Indian novelist

I live in Los Angeles, CA. My parents like to watch a lot of bad American television, so I got on my father's computer and went searching the Net and found you. I usually do not comment on what I read on the Net and I am not familiar with Ashok Banker, but I found this column extraordinary. Being a student of history I believe it is the people who make history. I prefer to read articles on the lives of ordinary people of the world and now I wish I could read more of Indian journalists mentioned in this column.

Really fantastic. I am proud to say that we are fully utilising the potential of the Internet now and are at par with the Western world, which considers itself tech savvy.

Very enlightening and informative. It helped me decide to see this movie today. It was released last Friday along with Aa Ab Laut Chale and Hum Aap ke Dil Mein Rehete Hain.

Although we found the movie Aa Ab Laut Chalen interesting, the review was well written. You did not identify Ash's brother and sister-in-law in your review. They are Bitu Walia (from New York) and Nimita Malhotra (from New Jersey) respectively, local talent.
