Biwi No 1 Continues To Be a Big Draw

Biwi No 1 played on more than 24 screens in its second week, retaining most of screens from its first week. In the third week the film is expected to be on at least 20 screens.

Though the distributors have not released the box-office figures, according to trade sources, the movie is bound to make profits.

Meanwhile, Sooryavansham, starring Amitabh Bachchan, is expected to do far better than his recent duds.

Safari, starring Sanjay Dutt, is also being shown in several cities.

Exhibitors, waiting for a huge hit, think Shubash Ghai could come to their rescue with Taal. The audio cassettes and CDs of the movie were released last week, and are emerging among the top 10.

"A R Rahman's name guarantees terrific initial sale, and if the tunes are catchy, there is a profit to be made," says a Jackson Heights shop owner. "Though the songs here are not as good as his music in Dil Se, this should do very well," he adds.

Ghai is one of the few film-makers here (apart from Yash Chopra and Mani Ratnam) who has instant name recognition. Though the stars from Taal are not an automatic draw, there is positive buzz about the film.

"If there is one film that could go beyond the $ 500,000 mark, and beat the collections of the recent Sarfarosh, it is Taal, " says Suprotim Bose, entertainment writer.
