Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar
Militants stormed into the heavily guarded Border Security Force residential area at Mader Bandipore in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir and killed five persons including Deputy Inspector General S K Chakravarty.
Police sources in Srinagar said the heavily armed militants hurled grenades and then sprayed bullets on some inmates. Joint Assistant Director Mohinder Nath, Sub Inspector M R Baskar, an unidentified soldier and the wife of a BSF constable were also killed in the 'well-planned attack'.
The sources said that the militants, whose number could not be ascertained, had entered the residential quarters and fired indiscriminately from their automatic weapons.
Sources said some BSF jawans were injured in the attack.
The militants reportedly took three BSF personnel including one JAD hostage. Senior army, BSF and police officers along with reinforcements have rushed to the spot.
The Indian Army and BSF have encircled the area and have been asking the militants to surrender.
Sources said five to 10 militants are still holed up in one of the residential quarters with the three hostages.
The area is located on the banks of Wuller lake in north Kashmir, some 55 kilometres from Srinagar.
Sources said that the militants would be flushed out soon. Tension has gripped the town and the locals are reportedly fleeing the area.
