Judge returns MDMA's plea in Rajiv killing probe

E-Mail this report to a friend

The designated court judge Vadivel Rathnam has returned to the Multi Disciplinary Monitoring Agency, a wing of the Central Bureau of Investigation, its plea to conduct further probe in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case based on the recommendations of the Jain Commission, seeking certain additional details including the copy of the Commission's report.

The MDMA had been set up by the Union government as per the report of the Commission which had enquired into the conspiracy aspect of the assassination of the former prime minister in May 1991 at Sriperumbudur.

According to MDMA sources, the plea, along with the additional details sought, was expected to be submitted to the judge on Monday.

The designated court, which had ceased to exist after its judge P Navaneetham awarded capital punishment to all the 26 accused tried in the case on January 21, 1998, was revived by the state government on a directive by the Madras high court.

The high court had directed the state government to issue necessary notification to revive the designated court while passing orders on a petition filed by the MDMA.
