Defence Minister George Fernandes today expressed surprise about reports that the Cabinet had cleared the Indian Navy's proposal for an indigenous aircraft carrier.

Speaking to the media at the Foreign Correspondents Club this morning, Fernandes said clearance for the project had not even gone up to the Cabinet Committee of Security.

Reports in the media had quoted highly placed sources as saying that the project for an indigenous aircraft carrier had been cleared by the CCS and it would be built within a period of 10 years at a cost of Rs 17.30 billion.

Replying to another question, Fernandes said some steps towards the restructuring of the defence ministry had already been initiated.
