E-Mail this report to a friend

A 17-year-old youth was gored to death and more than 100 people were injured in the annual Jallikattu festival (taming of the bulls) at Koothapar village near Tiruverambur yesterday.

Police said the bulls suddenly ran amok, ploughing through the crowd, killing one Thangamani and critically injuring six others.

Three persons who were watching the festival from the roof of a building also sustained serious injuries when the roof collapsed.

All the critically injured were admitted to the BHEL [Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited] and government hospitals in Tiruchirapalli, the police said.

About 750 bulls were brought from neighbouring Pudukkottai, Perambalur, Thanjavur and Tiruchirapalli for the festival.
