Four more arrested for TN hooch tragedy

The police arrested four more bootleggers including key suspect Gundu Jayaraman, charged with distributing the killer brew, which had claimed 15 lives in Putlar and neighbouring villages in Tiruvellore district, 40 km from here.

The police nabbed Gundu Jayaraman at suburban Poonamalee last night.

Othes arrested were: Kumarasamy, Senthil Murugan and Dilli Babu.

Babu had stolen five litres of methanol from a chemical firm at the nearby Kakkalur industrial estate where he was working and sold it to Gundu Jayaraman for Rs 300. They were nabbed at the southern suburb of Palavakkam in Madras.

Selvam, another accomplice of Gundu Jayaraman, had already been arrested.

In the meantime, a total of 96 people, who had consumed the liquor mixed with methanol, were still undergoing treatment at the Tiruvellore government hospital. Of them, the condition of three was still critical, according to reports received.
