Madras lawyers burn Centre's notification

Members of the newly formed Lawyers Against Corruption Forum today burnt copies of the Centre's notification transferring corruption cases against All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary J Jayalalitha and others from the special judges appointed by the state government to the sessions courts.

The forum staged its protest in the Madras high court premises.

The forum members, mainly lawyers sympathetic to the ruling DMK and its ally, the Tamil Maanila Congress, far outnumbered the advocates owing allegiance to the AIADMK, who made feeble protests against the action.

The AIADMK lawyers shouted slogans against the DMK regime when the copies were burnt.

Yesterday, the two groups came to blows in front of the high court when the forum members staged a dharna (sit-in) to protest against the Centre's notification.
