Train robbers stab veteran Naxalite Kanu Sanyal

E-Mail this report to a friend

Veteran Naxalite leader Kanu Sanyal was seriously injured when some robbers stabbed him at Nimtita in Murshidabad district of West Bengal yesterday while he was travelling by train.

The robbers had raided the compartment to loot the passengers. But some passengers, including Sanyal, protested and refused to part with their valuables.

The criminals stabbed Sanyal in the back before escaping with the booty.

Sanyal returned to Siliguri after he was administered first aid.

Sources in Calcutta said the state government has been trying to persuade Sanyal to get admitted to hospital for better treatment, but he refuses to accept government treatment.

They said police have launched a vigorous combing operation to catch the bandits. "We have already picked up some of the culprits and are carrying out raids to nab the others," a senior official of the home department said.

Condemning the attack, Home Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya directed the police to take stern action against the culprits.
