Vaiko calls notification an 'interference'

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko, whose party is supporting the Vajpayee government at the Centre, today felt that the Centre's gazette notification transferring corruption cases against AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalitha and others pending before special judges appointed by the Tamil Nadu government, to other judges, amounted to "interference in the judiciary's independence".

In a statement in Madras, he said he had already made it clear that he did not agree with the Centre's stand on the controversy arising out of the appointment of special judges by the state government.

Pointing out that the Madras high court had already given its verdict on the issue and Jayalalitha's petition challenging the high court order was coming up for hearing before the Supreme Court on February 15, he felt that the Centre's notification at this juncture amounted to "interference in the judiciary's independence".
