Delhi experiences coldest Feb day in 29 years

Light rain throughout the day saw Delhi experience its coldest February day since 1970 with the maximum day temperature dipping nearly seven degrees to 14.4 degrees Celsius today.

S C Gupta, director of the Safdarjang meteorological centre, said a deep upper air trough system, which had resulted in rain right up to Maharashtra, caused the showers.

The coldest February day was on February 1, 1970, when the mercury fell to 12 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature today was 8.7 degrees.

Gupta said only 1.6mm rain was recorded today, but the light showers are likely to continue till tomorrow morning.

Night temperatures were appreciably below normal in some parts of the Bihar plains while they were below normal in some parts of the Bihar plateau, Saurashtra, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema.

They were markedly above normal in north Madhya Pradesh while they were appreciably above normal in east Rajasthan, central Maharashtra, parts of western Uttar Pradesh, the Gujarat region, and the remaining parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Night temperatures were above normal in some parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu, west Rajasthan, the Konkan, Goa, Vidarbha, Tamil Nadu and south interior Karnataka. They were normal in the rest of the country outside Arunachal Pradesh from where data were sparse.

Rain or snow occurred at many places in Jammu and Kashmir and at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh.

Rain or thundershowers occurred at most places in west Madhya Pradesh, at many places in Vidarbha, at a few places in central Maharashtra and Kerala, and at isolated places in east Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Very light rain also occurred at isolated places in the hills of west Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

Mainly dry weather prevailed over the rest of the country.

Rain or snow is likely to occur at a few places in the hills of west Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.

Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at a few places in Madhya Pradesh, north-central Maharashtra, Vidarbha, south Tamil Nadu, south Kerala, and Lakshadweep, and at isolated places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the plains of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, north Rajasthan, Gujarat region, Marathwada, north Tamil Nadu, and north Kerala.

Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the country.
