Former chief of army staff General Krishnaswamy Sunderrajan aka Gen Sunderji died at the Army Hospital Research and Referral Centre in New Delhi tonight following a prolonged illness. He was 71.

The general leaves behind his wife and son.

Gen Sunderji was in hospital for several months in a serious condition. His condition deteriorated rapidly over the last few days and he slipped into a coma from which he did not recover.

The end came at 9.15pm IST.

Commissioned in 1945, Gen Sunderji served as the army chief from February 1, 1986, to April 30, 1988. It was during his tenure that the controversial decision to purchase the Bofors gun was taken.

The general will be cremated at 3.30pm IST on February 10 at the Brar Square crematorium in the capital.
