E-Mail this report to a friend

Former Pakistani prime minister and leader of the opposition Benazir Bhutto has filed five references of corruption against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief and members of his family. The references were filed before Chief Ehtesab Commissioner Justice Mujadid Mirza,

Besides Sharief, references have been filed against the prime minister's father and his two brothers Shabaz and Abbass. Shabaz Sharif is the chief minister of Punjab province.

In the references, filed yesterday through her lawyer Babar Awan, Bhutto alleged that Sharief and members of his family asserted their influence and misused their position in money-laundering and grant of contracts to their favourites in various projects.

She also sent copies of the references to the president, chief justice of Pakistan's supreme court, chiefs of the armed forces, and the director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence. Justice Mirza later sent the references to the Ehtesab bureau for investigations.
