Church burnt down in Assam

E-Mail this report to a friend

A church was allegedly burnt down in the Gosaigaon subdivision of Assam's Kokrajhar district.

Kokrajhar District Magistrate J I Kathar said one person was injured when a group of Santhals reportedly burnt down the church on Friday night.

The church was located in Sapakhata village of Gosaigaon subdivision, which is dominated by Bodos, most of whom have embraced Christianity, the official said.

The police were investigating the incident to ascertain if the incident had communal overtones or was a reprisal attack by the Santhals living in relief camps after Bodos drove them out of their homes.

The district magistrate said the situation was now under control and that security measures have been taken to maintain the peace.
