Government denies developing ICBM through Agni missile

The government today denied that India was working on using the Agni technology to develop an Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile with a range of over 8000 km.

A report from Bangalore in a section of the press had claimed that the Defence Research and Development Organisation was working on integrating the re-entry technology developed in Agni and the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle to develop a 8,000-km ICBM.

''The report is incorrect, fabricated and has no basis'', a defence ministry spokesman said.

The report had quoted defence ministry sources as saying that preliminary work on the missile will combine knowhow perfected during the Agni programme and the expertise of scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation. The ICBM was a natural progression from the Agni II missile programme, the sources said.
