UAE ratifies extradition treatyAshok Tuteja in Dubai The United Arab Emirates cabinet has ratified the extradition treaty signed with India, which covers cooperation between the two countries in civil, commercial and crime-related matters as well as mutual legal assistance. The ratification came yesterday during a regular weekly meeting of the cabinet, held under the chairmanship of UAE Vice-President Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, emirates news agency WAM said. The treaty was signed by the two countries in New Delhi on October 25 when UAE Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Wqaf Mohammed Bin Nakhira Al Dhahiri visited India. On India's behalf, it was signed by Law Minister Ram Jethmalani. The treaty provides a legal framework for seeking the extradition of terrorists, economic offenders and other criminals wanted by either side. The treaty will pave the way for expeditious disposal of a number of pending cases between the two countries. It embodies the desire of the two countries to strengthen bilateral cooperation and take concrete steps to combat terrorism and other crimes. Under its provisions, the two countries shall extradite any person found in their respective countries accused or convicted of an extradition offence. It will have retrospective effect and the extradition will be possible irrespective of whether the crime was committed before or after the entry into force of the treaty. Soon after the signing of the treaty, a team of Central Bureau of Investigation officials from India had visited the UAE and held wide-ranging discussions with officials in the UAE interior ministry on the modalities to apprehend economic and criminal offenders wanted by either side.
