E-Mail this report to a friend

Five militants, including three foreigners, and two paramilitary jawans were killed while four security personnel were injured in two separate encounters in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir since last evening, a defence ministry spokesman revealed.

He said today that the security forces received a tip-off about the presence of militants at Banshal Nala village in Doda district. They immediately cordoned off the area and launched a massive search operation to nab the militants.

While the operation was in progress, militants fired upon the search party with automatic weapons from different directions. The search party retaliated and in the ensuing encounter three top foreign militants were killed. A jawan too died.

Three jawans were also injured in the encounter. The injured jawans were immediately evacuated to a military hospital, the spokesman said and added that some arms and ammunition were also recovered from the encounter site.

The spokesman disclosed that in another encounter which took place at Morcha Dhar village of the district early today two militants belonging to the Hizbul Mujahideen were killed and another injured. The slain militants were identified as Abdul Qayoom and Shaukar Ali.

A security forces jawan was also killed and two others were injured during the gun-battle, he said.
