Four Kargil heroes awarded Param Vir Chakra

Four Indian Army personnel -- Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav (all posthumous) and Rifleman Sanjay Kumar -- have been awarded the country's highest military honour, the Param Vir Chakra, for displaying exceptional valour during the Kargil crisis.

Nine Maha Vir Chakras, four Uttam Yudh Seva Medals, 53 Vir Chakras, two Yudh Seva Medals and 84 Sena Medals, including one bar, have also been awarded to the heroes of Operation Vijay, an official spokesman in New Delhi said today.

The recipients of the MVC are:

  1. Major Sonam Wangchuk, Assam (Ladakh Scouts)
  2. Major Vivek Gupta, 2 Rajputana Rifles (posthumous)
  3. Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari, Mechanised Infantry, 18 Grenadiers (posthumous)
  4. Major Padmapani Acharya, 2 Raj Rif (posthumous)
  5. Captain Anuj Nayyar, 17 Jat (posthumous)
  6. Captain Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, Army Service Corps 2 Raj Rif (posthumous)
  7. Lt Keishing Clifford Nongrum, 12 Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry (posthumous)
  8. Lt Balwan Singh, 18 Grenadiers
  9. Naik Digendra Kumar, 2 Raj Rif.

The army personnel awarded the UYSM are:

  1. Lt General Krishen Pal, PVSM, VSM
  2. Maj Gen Mohinder Puri
  3. Brig Prakash Chand Katoch
  4. Brig Amar Nath Aul (all infantrymen).

In addition to the gallantry awards for Operation Vijay, 182 other gallantry awards have been announced. These include six Kirti Chakras, two Vir Chakras, 26 Shaurya Chakras, 143 Sena Medals (including one bar), three Nao Sena Medals and two Vayu Sena Medals.

The recipients of the Kirti Chakra are:

  1. Maj Raman Dada, 11 Sikh (posthumous)
  2. Naib Subedar Jagroop Singh, 28 Punjab (posthumous)
  3. Havildar Rakesh Paul, 16 Dogra (posthumous)
  4. Naik Tikaram Thapa, 3 Assam (posthumous)
  5. Naik Narayan Das, 15 Assam (posthumous)
  6. Sepoy Balbir Singh, 22 Punjab (posthumous).

The recipients of the two Vir Chakras awarded for action outside Kargil are:

  1. Naib Subedar Rampal Singh, 9 Rajput (posthumous)
  2. Lance Naik Prem Pal, 19 Garhwal Rifles (posthumous).
